Four years ago, you were walking across the stage and being handed your high school diploma. Now, you are concluding your years of education and earning a spot in the real world. Are you ready? Graduating from college is an outstanding achievement that deserves to be celebrated. However, if you’re anything like our team here at Sky Inc, you’re already thinking about your next steps. You are on the cusp of your next great adventure, and while we understand your eagerness, we urge you to pause your plans long enough to take in some experienced advice.

“Follow your fear.” — Tina Fey

You’ve spent all of your time in college in classrooms and learning information dedicated to a solitary major. Now, how would you feel if we told you that according to a study conducted by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, only 27% of college graduates work in a field related to their major? Instead of hiding away in fear of the unknown, we encourage you to follow your fear. Start applying to job opportunities that interest you but may not be associated with what you studied for the past four years. You’ve accrued a TON of valuable and transferable skills. Forget about being complacent; aim for greatness!

As we mentioned earlier, earning a degree is a huge accomplishment. Don’t feel the need to rush this moment. Take a breath and bask in your feelings. It’s essential as you head into the bustling job market and eventually into a competitive career field to make a habit of celebrating your wins. Enjoy a few days of celebrating; this will give your brain a much-needed and deserved break.

Graduates, our next piece of advice may be the most challenging. Finding the job of your dreams may be easier said than done, and you are going to need to be patient. Since you started Kindergarten, you’ve been running your life on a specified timeline. Now that you’ve graduated, that security blanket has been pulled away.

You’re not guaranteed a job position by a specific deadline. Instead, you have to put yourself out there, learn from less than perfect job interviews, and take risks.

You’ll find a company that you fit the best with in time, but it’s important that you don’t compare yourself to others. All that will do is crush your spirit and force you to lose confidence.

Embrace this next chapter of your life, and don’t feed into the narrative that you have to land a steady job opportunity days after you walk across the stage. This is your journey; take it at your own speed. We hope that these bits of advice help calm your nerves and alleviate some stress. Our team at Sky Inc has been in your shoes and can assure you that what’s to come is going to be exciting, difficult, and worth it!
